Bruce the poet

I did something new this week. I pitched a project to a group of people and received a grant. The grant came from a group participating in SoupSF. Through them new projects are being funded every month.

So, what did I pitch? A book. I'm going to produce a book about a homeless poet. Bruce Halpern.

Although Bruce always wanted to be a poet he didn't actually become one until he became homeless. He said that the transition into homelessness rid the fake relationships from his life. He became more honest. He says he became human. This allowed him to write. And write. And write.

I met Bruce before I left for Ohio University. At that time I was interested in getting closer to people and their stories, but wasn't clear on how to go about the journalistic side of it. Now, I'm back in SF knowing how to produce a story.

Farewell To Shotwell

This past week I moved from one San Francisco hood to another. Taking advantage of the day set apart to pack, I took a long break to walk around aimlessly. The only goal was to take in the surroundings that would soon be across town. Sometimes it takes leaving or arriving to notice the details we might otherwise pass by.
